The Expanded Version
Hello from Montana! In case you missed it from the homepage, my name is Suzie O'Connell, and I am the owner and designer here at Sunset Rose Books. I'm also the USA Today bestselling author of the Northstar and Two-Lane Wyoming romance series as well as the Sea Glass Cove romances, which I write as Maren Ferguson.
I'm a bit of a wandering heart—born in California, raised in Washington, and I've called Montana home for half my life with a two-year love affair with Wyoming tossed in for good measure—which is why I decided to call my design business Sunset Rose Books. No, not rose as in the flower but rose as in compass rose. And okay, the color scheme is actually that of the Belt of Venus… or what you get as the earth's shadow slides up the eastern sky as the sun sets, that beautiful transition from cool blue to purple to pink to peach… Sigh. Love it. However, I thought "Belt of Venus Rose Books" sounded a tad ridiculous, and technically, the Belt of Venus is part of sunset. Whoops. My nerdiness is showing, isn't it? You can find out more about that and get to know me better personally over on my author site's About page if you're inclined. But you're here about a book cover, right?
I know what you're thinking: Why would someone who already makes her living writing want or need to design covers and format books for others? Isn't writing for a living the dream? Of course it is, but I love design. Before my book sales took off and allowed me to quit my day job, I formatted books and designed book covers for other authors to earn a little extra money on the side, and well….
I have something to admit. You see, I have a little problem. It's called Photoshop. I'm addicted to it. Yep. I am, and have been since I got my hands on my first copy way back in 2000 (has it really been almost two decades?! Yikes!). My photographer/graphic designer brother gave me his old copy when he upgraded back when I was in college, and I've been hooked ever since.
Phew. Feels good to admit that! I'm also addicted to helping other authors succeed because, yes, writing for a living is the dream, and to get to that point, you need to have professional packaging for your brilliant book. I want to help you with that. Because I wouldn't have been able to live that full-time-writer dream without all the authors who were generous enough to share their talents and expertise with me.
My Work Style
As you've probably guessed from my not-so-formal bio, I'm pretty laid back, and that's how I like to interact with my clients. Book publishing is stressful enough, and I'd like you to feel comfortable and at home while I'm working on your cover—one less reason to stress. I'm willing to provide unlimited revisions, and I don't ask for payment up front. That way if, for whatever reason, we can't come up with a design you like or your vision and mine just aren't clicking (hey, it happens, and more often than you might think), we don't have to worry about pesky things like refunds. Like I said, I enjoy designing and I want to help you make your book shine on those crowded retailer pages.
Here's how my process works: you place an order via the Pricing page (for custom covers) or the Premades page (for a premade cover), I receive the order and respond via email within 24 hours with a few additional questions to get started, and then we, well, get started! I'll take your suggestions and files, do any stock image hunting I need to do, create a mock-up design, and send it off to you. From there, we'll fine tune it until you're thrilled with it. Once we've settled on a design, I'll send you an invoice. As soon as that's paid, I'll create a client page for you where you'll be able to download all the full-resolutions, ready-to-upload images for your project. To see how that part of the process works, I've created a "Sample Client" page you can test drive. Go ahead and give it a whirl. It's fully functional, complete with full-resolution (but watermarked) files for one of my own forthcoming books. Don't worry—you'll need the exact URL to get to your own page (which I will email to you when everything is all ready); I won't link to it anywhere on this site.
If you want to chat and get to know me a bit more before you order, please do! Just shoot me an email me at email@example.com
